Our readers from the municipal and private sectors will be interested in a guide on alternative waste treatment, developed in collaboration between the South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), GreenCape (under the Western Cape Government), South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and South African Local Government Association (SALGA).
The guideincludes the following:
- Outlines different waste management technologies (12) and where these could be applied
- Lists legal requirements for each technology
- Where a project is municipal, it outlines municipal process that must be followed.
The guide is useful to both the private sector and municipalities. It highlights licenses and permits required each technology, expected application time frames and where to apply to.
