South Africa’s renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme (REIPPPP) is into its sixth year and has achieved remarkable successes to date.

Opportunities: Fast facts

Changes in the country’s electricity sector continue to present a variety of opportunities for the RE market in future rounds of the REIPPPP, during which the government will procure a further 7.8 GWp of generation capacity.

  • potential for local government procurement of electricity from IPPs
  • manufacturing opportunities from local content requirements
  • opportunities for greentech manufacturers in the proposed Atlantis GreenTech SEZ.

The programme has: procured over 6 300 MWp of renewable energy generation capacity, with over 2 400 MWp of capacity connected and feeding into the national grid; selected 102 preferred bidders to develop projects across the country (with projects in every province across South Africa); received a Ministerial determination to procure a further 6 300 MWp of generation capacity (a second ‘doubling’ of the capacity allocated to the programme, merit to the programme’s success); attracted over R 195 billion in investment, with over 25% of this being foreign investment; successfully stimulated the development of a local renewable energy technology components manufacturing base; achieved significant technology price reductions – with South Africa boasting some of the world’s lowest clean energy costs

The programme and by virtue the renewable energy industry, is well positioned to continue contributing to national development agenda as embodied in the government’s strategic infrastructure projects (SIPs) and the National Development Plan (NDP).
