Both GreenCape’s Energy and Water teams have recently been nominated for global awards that celebrate the international significance of the impact of the work done with our funders and partners.
GreenCape’s Alternative Service Delivery Unit (ASDU) is a finalist for the Grid Edge Award of the S&P Global Platts Global Energy Award
Energy companies from 37 countries have been selected as finalists for the 21st annual S&P Global Platts Global Energy Awards. GreenCape’s ASDU is a finalist in the Grid Edge Award category. Other finalists in this category are ENGIE Storage, EV Connect, Go Electric, GridBeyond, Limejump, PXiSE, Rocky Mountain Power, S&C Electric Company, Siemens, Tampa Electric Company and the AES Corporation.
In 2017 GreenCape established South Africa’s first Alternative Service Delivery Fund and Implementation Unit. The Alternative Service Delivery Unit (ASDU) is a dedicated off-grid management authority established to provide energy services to off-grid communities in South Africa. Directly linked to GreenCape’s vision for a thriving prosperous Africa mobilised by the green economy, ASDU’s vision is equal and unhindered access, for all South Africans, to an open, technically sound, socially inclusive and commercially resilient energy economy.
The ASDU has a mandate to facilitate, contract and manage programmes/initiatives within the off-grid market in South Africa. ASDU is driving the rapid provision of reliable, affordable and safe energy innovations to address basic needs, drive social development and create jobs. In so doing, the Alterative Service Delivery Unit (ASDU) builds the foundation for accelerated socio-economic development and turns the current lack of infrastructure into an opportunity for empowerment.

Established in 1999 and often described as “the Oscars of the energy industry,” the S&P Global Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 21 categories spanning the entire energy complex.
Winners will be announced at the 2019 Global Energy Awards black-tie dinner on December 12, in New York City.
GreenCape’s Water team drought resilience partnerships are up for a BCI Global Award
GreenCape’s Water team was announced as the winner of the Continuity and Resilience Provider Award at the recent BCI Africa 2019 Awards. After winning the regional award, the Water team is up for the BCI Global Award in the same category. The winner of this Award is recognised as providing an outstanding service, or product, relevant to the continuity and resilience profession.
Between 2015 and 2018, Cape Town, and more broadly the Western Cape and other provinces, was impacted by a severe drought. In response to this drought and subsequent water crisis, the City of Cape Town and Western Cape Government partnered with several organisations to form an economic water resilience task team. As one of the partners, GreenCape played an important role in building resilience in Cape Town’s industrial sectors. Drawing on expertise and support from the CoCT and WCG officials, GreenCape’s team of water resilience specialists helped ~400 of the most water-intensive businesses survive water shortages and very high water tariffs.

“Confronting the reality of Day Zero and the potentially disastrous impacts it would have on our economy and the lives of our citizens galvanised us into doing whatever we could to avoid such a scenario. Ultimately what saved us from the worst impacts of this crisis was the willingness of our citizens and our businesses to act together to drastically reduce water usage. The partnerships that, in many ways, organically formed around this crisis shows the inherent resilience of our region that exists within its people. It is hoped that we can draw on this again to confront the other challenges facing us,” said Lance Greyling, Director: Enterprise and Investment, City of Cape Town.
The BCI Global Awards serve to showcase the value of the Business Continuity profession and to demonstrate its critical importance to organizations of any size, in any sector, globally. Winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner at BCI World Conference & Exhibition in London on 5 November.
