Home 5 News 5 City of Cape Town to offer Financially Distressed Companies Relief from Punitive Level 6 Water and Sanitation Restriction Tariffs

18 June 2018

The severe water crisis in Cape Town necessitated the introduction of level 6 water and sanitation restriction tariffs from 1 February 2018 in an effort to drive down water consumption. This has been a very successful mechanism for achieving water reduction objectives, but it has also imposed severe financial costs on businesses in water intensive sectors.

In recognition of these severe costs and the potential closure and attendant job losses of these businesses, the City is willing to consider assistance in terms of its Water and Sanitation Tariff Policy. This would entail placing distressed companies on level 5 tariffs as opposed to the more onerous level 6 tariff, within the context of the City’s need to maintain a financially viable water service.

Companies must first submit requests for exemption to the City via the application form for relief consideration. Distressed companies are encouraged to complete the Tariff Exemption: Water Efficiency Compliance Application Form and submit with accompanying documentation to [email protected] for a water efficiency criteria assessment.
