Home 5 News 5 Meet the team: Deshanya Naidoo

20 November 2020

GreenCape is pleased to introduce to our stakeholders a new appointment in our Circular Economy Team.

Deshanya Naidoo (Circular Economy Intern)

What is your background expertise and how does it relate to your role here at GreenCape?

I studied my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Upon completion I joined RCL Foods as a graduate engineer. I have worked mainly in the sustainability & packaging, and wastewater sector. At the beginning of 2020 I joined a consulting company where I worked with the next
generation operations team.

Why have you chosen the career path that you have?

I chose this path because of the work that I did while at RCL Foods, where the company was joining the SA Plastics Pact and PETCO. This how I got introduced into the sustainability sector. I also spent a lot of my spare time doing research in the circular economy. I then figured that this is how I can do what I like for fun – which is ideal for any professional.

What project have you been working on as you start your role here at GreenCape?

Since starting at GreenCape, I have taken some time to learn more about the organisational culture. I have been interacting with colleagues so that I can get to understand who plays what role in the different sectors. I am hoping that by the end of my first month I will have adjusted to the environment and settled into project work.

What impact are you hoping to have in the sector?

I am hoping to grow in my new role. I still have aspirations to pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering.  It’s a no-brainer that it is the best timing for me to be in this space. I hope that GreenCape will have an impact on me in the short and long-term. I hope to learn as much as possible and make an impact in a way I find meaningful.

What is your overall impression of GreenCape thus far?

When I decided to join GreenCape I was particularly enticed by the great work that the organisation does in the waste and water sector. I have been reading industry briefs and reports, and am very excited about the Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP). In general, everyone I have met so far has been professional and welcoming.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy going to gym during the week for a quick reset. On weekends I like being outdoors, hiking and spending time with my friends and family.
