The Western Cape Industrial Symbiosis Programme (WISP), which is funded by the Western Cape Government, is a free facilitation service which connects companies so that they can identify and realise the business opportunities enabled by using unused or residual resources (materials, energy, water, assets, logistics, expertise). WISP is being delivered by GreenCape – a sector development agency established by the Western Cape Government to promote the regional Green Economy – one that is low carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive.

WISP has commenced with building a network of companies that are keen to share or use under-utilised resources. Since August 2013, over 1200 potential resource exchanges – referred to as “synergies” – have been identified. Many of these synergies are under development and several have progressed to actual exchanges of previously under-utlised resources between companies. Synergies have many potential benefits including cost savings to business, new sales, increased profits; opportunities for new enterprise development; diversion of material from landfill; water, energy and carbon emission savings; and the potential to safeguard and create new jobs.

GreenCape would like to commission a service provider to develop a Carbon Calculator to assist in determining the carbon emission savings of synergies enabled by WISP.
