GreenCape, in conjunction with the City of Cape Town and 100 Resilient Cities, has published a series of case studies showcasing practical examples of resilience in action in Cape Town.

Resilience is the “capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt and grow no matter what kind of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience” (100 Resilient Cities, 2019).

GreenCape has published a resilience case study that describes the Innovations for Water Resilience Competition (2018), a sharktank-style pitching competition that was part of an ongoing partnership between the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and GreenCape, with support from the City of Cape Town. The competition aimed to create a platform to promote water tech and services innovation that has proliferated in the midst of the Western Cape (South Africa) drought crisis. The Innovations for Water Resilience Competition 2018 builds resilience in Cape Town and beyond by fostering green economic growth, connecting the workforce with a changing economy and by collaborating with businesses to create a resilient local economy.

  • The rapid proliferation of water-related technologies and services in response to the drought;
  • The importance of collaboration and collaborative techniques;
  • How a system shock can be used to drive innovation;
