It highlights the composition of the market, discusses key players, market size and noteworthy trends, and then covers the main guiding policies and legislation in the renewable energy space, before exploring opportunities, incentives and barriers within the sector.

Opportunities: Fast facts

  • Over 6300MW of procured capacity to date, signifying a huge growth in the South African renewable energy market

  • Close to 3 000 MW of generation capacity connected and feeding into the national grid

  • Over R 190 billion in investments attracted, over 25% of which originate from international sources

  • Significant additional investment in manufacturing capacity in the industry with GRI 30% expansion and Resolux R25 million facility in Atlantis

GreenCape’s work in this space

The renewable energy sector aims to support the growth of the large scale renewable energy sector, from project developers, equipment suppliers, technical advisors to financiers. The aim, in line with GreenCape’s objectives, is to attract investment into South Africa as well as the creation of jobs – primarily in the manufacturing sector.

Various work streams comprise the team’s support of the utility scale renewable energy, including:

  • Engagements on local content in the REIPPP programme, with a view to facilitate expedited communication between relevant government departments (such as the dti) and industry members

  • Engagements with industry in the implementation of SED and ED – in a bid to ensure continues support for the renewable energy sector, from both civil society and government

  • Enabling the uptake of green technologies and support the growth of the clean technology industry (supply side) through targeted promotion in the agriculture and agri-processing sectors (demand side)
  • Engaging with potential manufacturers of renewable energy components who may qualify for setting up in the proposed Atlantis greentech manufacturing sector

  • Setting up the proposed Atlantis greentech manufacturing SEZ, which will be well suited to enable projects to meet their local content obligations
